Powder and freeride snowboard size

A longer board floats better in deep snow and feels steadier at speed. SnowboardSizeCalc adds 4 cm to the all-mountain length for freeride and powder boards, so this page starts with the freeride style. Tapered and setback powder shapes and volume-shifted boards are often ridden shorter and wider, so check the maker’s guide.

For a 5′10″, 170 lb intermediate rider that is a 161 cm freeride board.

How the snowboard size calculator works

SnowboardSizeCalc converts your height to centimetres and multiplies it by 0.88 (0.83 for riders under 150 cm), which puts the nose of the board between your chin and nose. It then adds the riding-style adjustment (park −3 cm, all-mountain 0, freeride +4 cm) and the ability adjustment (beginner −2 cm, advanced +2 cm). Finally it compares your weight with a typical weight for your height and moves the length 1 cm for every full 5 kg of difference, up to 6 cm. The range shown is ±2 cm.

    Frequently asked questions

Should a powder board be longer?

Traditionally yes, by 3–6 cm. Volume-shifted shapes are an exception and are often sized 3–5 cm shorter.

Can I use my all-mountain board in powder?

Yes. Set your bindings back on the board to keep the nose up.

    What is a setback stance?

Bindings mounted closer to the tail, which helps the nose float in deep snow.

    Is SnowboardSizeCalc free?

Yes, with no sign-up or ads, and your numbers stay in your browser.

    Are the results exact?

No. They are a starting point. Always check the rider weight range in the manufacturer’s size chart.
